Why become a mitra?

Becoming a mitra is intended to be a way for someone to mark a shift from being someone who is interested in Buddhism, or who likes meditating, to being someone who feels a definite affinity with the Buddhist path.

Although this is an internal process, it is very helpful to mark the process externally. There are not many rites of passage left in life; becoming a mitra can help mark the fact that you have started with a certain degree of determination on a spiritual path.
