South African-born pianist and composer David Earl (Akashadeva) broadcast a piano recital for the SABC at 16, and at 17 made his professional concerto debut with the then Cape Town Symphony Orchestra.

Moving to London two years later, he studied piano and composition at Trinity College of Music, and subsequently gave a number of solo piano recitals at Wigmore Hall and London’s South Bank, as well as broadcasting for BBC Radio 3.

In addition to music for solo piano, David has written concertos for piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, and trumpet, as well as two double concertos for 2 Pianos and 2 Violins. Works for chamber ensemble include a Viola Sonata,
two Sonatas each for Violin and Cello, a Piano Quintet, Piano Sextet, Clarinet Trio and String Quartet. Orchestral compositions include The Wineland Suite, A Carbon Symphony (recorded by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 2019), and seven commissioned ballet scores.

An opera about the life of Rupert Brooke Strange Ghost premiered in Cambridge, UK, in December 2015. Other operas include Mary and the Conqueror (in which Alexander the Great and Mary Renault meet in the afterlife) and Lawrence of Arabia. The CD of Cello Sonata No 1 and the Mandalas Piano Suite won a Gramophone Editor's recommendation rosette (“For those who like their contemporary music tonal, substantial and individual...David Earl is certainly a name to add to your list”) and was nominated by International Piano magazine for best new music recording.

David has been a long-time resident of Cambridge where he teaches piano performing and is a supervisor at Cambridge University Tripos composition students.
